Death By Tech Vault Leak: July 22nd, 2020
I write some posts for paying subscribers only. Occasionally, I let one of those paying posts out into the wild after a few months in what I call a Vault Leak.
Today’s Vault Leak harks back to July of this year. A day shortly after Cloudflare had a major outage that affected thousands of sites. And while this time it happened to be Cloudflare, other large internet companies have had similar issues. The fundamental problem isn’t these companies per se; it’s our hell-bent drive to break the internet by flocking to centralized services that threaten the security and stability of the internet as a whole.
The internet has wholly departed from its early days of resiliency and we are now living in silos where a single company or, indeed a single person, can cause major damage to the internet by simply typing a word wrong. This current situation can be directly traced back to the root of all evil; money. There are huge profits to be made in internet services.
